The Jantar Mantar is an astronomical garden observatory. Jantar
Mantar in English means 'Magical Device'. It was built for the Maharaja
Jai Singh II (1693 -1743) in the centre of Jaipur. The instruments
were used to observe the movements of sun, moon, planets and stars.
This is the largest of the five observatories founded by Sawai Jai
Singh-II in various parts of the country between 1724 and 1734,
the Maharaja of Jaipur constructed five astronomical observatories
in west central India (Delhi 1724, Jaipur 1728, Ujjain 1734, Varanasi
1737 and Mathura 1738).
